Abstract
Avoiding Exaggeration and Deficiency is considered a fundamental principle for examining the narrations transmitted in relation to the knowledge of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). Since any person may, in the process of transforming narrational data into belief and conviction, fall into errors such as excess or Exaggeration, and Deficiency or lowering their status, the existence of a clear criterion and a reliable standard is necessary in order to remain safe from falling into the trap of Exaggeration and Deficiency by relying upon it. This criterion and judgment is connected with the human capacity, which is gradational and capable of development, for attaining correct belief. The tasbīḥ of God, which is the declaration of His transcendence from negative attributes, plays a fundamental role in purifying the heart in acquiring correct knowledge of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them); on the one hand, it rejects deifying the Ahl al-Bayt, and on the other hand, it removes Deficiency in failing to recognize their true virtues.
